Message “This is not a recovery disk” or “No Disk” When Windows Boots to login screen.

Question: Hi I received the flash drive for password reset, however, my computer HP windows 7 will not accept the drive. I continue to get a error message that says this is not a recovery disc. I’m thinking I need a CD disc instead of a USB drive. Is this the case? do you happen to have the password reset disc?

Answer: Hi thanks for reaching out for assistance with this. So the “recovery disk” message is from the computer thinking you are going to put in a recovery disk when you start Windows, which you aren’t.

The computer didn’t boot from the USB. If you boot from the USB it boots independently from Windows and you should not see a screen like that. JUST IGNORE THAT SCREEN. Try the following steps.

You should NOT be asked to insert the USB. If you see this screen, ignore it because it means you did not successfully boot from the USB. Follow these steps.

1. If you see this screen hit cancel and remove the USB.
2. Turn the power off to the computer.
3. Insert the USB into the computer.
4. Power on the computer and enter your BIOS and make sure you select the USB as your PRIMARY boot device. You can also just go into the boot menu too when you start the computer and select the USB to boot from. Note, make sure the USB is the primary boot device (so it boots from the USB first and not the hard-drive). If you don’t know how to do this there is another article in the knowledgebase on the steps needed to boot from the USB.
5. When you successfully boot from the USB, you will first see it “loading files…” then you will see a picture of Earth at night. At this point, continue with the regular instructions on resetting the password.
6. Once you have reset the password, remove the USB and reboot the computer.
7. It should load into windows and when you get to where you enter the password, just hit ENTER and it should go right in (as the password should be removed). If you are asked for the password, just hit ENTER and it should load into the account.
